Once a educated foreigner visits a zen monk to learn about zen masters. The monk provides him a seat and brings a tray with a kettle of tea and two cups. The monk starts pouring the cup of the visitor and it starts overflowing. The visitor gets shocked to see this and asks the monk to stop pouring the tea as the cup is already overflowing.

The monk stops his action and tells his visitor that, the overflowing cup represents the mindset of the guest. If the visitor wants to learn anything new from the monk, he needs to empty his cup before the monk can start teaching him.
